Apparently the BostonNow Hawker at Porter is getting rave reviews. Now I rush by this man everyday and I'll admit he does a nice job at what he does, but my opinion is it's a little annoying.

he operates with the rapid-fire style of salesmanship of an olde tyme newsboy, belting out, but not quite hollering, his pitches in the general direction of every commuter as each enters the station. he projects with gusto. it's as though he's offering up free cups of crucial coffee, not these cheapo rags that'll be used later to soak up spills on the seats of the trains.... he's kind of awesome

Child Labor laws violated

Attorney General issued a press release citing child labor violations. Somerville and Cambridge stores included.

Note at the bottom someone comments on how having these kids work past 10 is completely acceptable because they are keeping kids off streets. Most of the citations were in places such as Burlington, Hyannis, Newton and Taunton. Also for stores such as Hollister, Things Remembered, KB toys, and The Children's Place. (hehe).
Lets be realistic. Working is awesome for teenagers. Allows social experience they may not be getting elsewhere, allows them to create their own work ethic, as well as earn money they can selfishly spend. I think teenagers should be working. It is super, but i don't think saying working past 10 is going to stop them from getting into trouble. Laws are there for a reason, and if you think working in the mall is what cures your kid of peer pressure, and a whole list of other things that leads to drugs/violence etc. You are wrong. It may help a little, but having a child work till 5am is definitely not the answer.

Kids Play Indoors

There is almost nothing worse than winter activities when the kids are sick of them. They just want to go outside and play, run around build snow men., play on the playgrounds. But all the playgrounds are covered in snow, and when the snow melts they are muddy and gross. Well the YMCA is opening its doors for kids to run around for $1. Parents/caregiver must supervise their kids constantly, but it will give you a chance to meet up with other parents while your children run out some of that pre-nap energy. The YMCA is right next to the library. Run off some energy, and go check out the library for story time.
The program is funded by the Somerville Children's Network and is run on Wednesday's 9a-11a. Eligible ages are 0-5years.

So...I attempted to find something for you guys today, and I am sad to say there is very little happening in the world of Cambridge/Somerville this weekend.

What is a plow? I feel as if the city of Somerville is asking themselves that question every day. Here is an interesting letter to the editor "Next year I will ask for a snowplow on my wheelchair"
I feel as if the City of Somerville was completely unresponsive to residents pleas. This last snowstorm left a complete mess on the roads.
I live on the line of Somerville/Cambridge near Harvard. It is night and day outside my door, one side of the street is nicely shoveled and cars are able to park on the street. The Somerville side? Piles of snow and ice in the roads as well as on the sidewalks. SUV's were trying to throw themselves into the ice, but as you look down the street, there was not a car in sight. There couldn't be, the piles of snow in the street were to high to even think to park a car on it. It was gosh darn RIDICULOUS!! Thank goodness for this rain/temps. Otherwise it would still be a huge mess. I keep seeing landlords/residents need to shovel off sidewalks in front of properties, then why doesn't the city have to take care of the roads?
Dilemma: Too much snow on the even side of the street, due to a snow emergency not being declared by the city.
Easy Solution: Declare a snow emergency directly after the storm. A ticket 2 weeks later doesn't help the parking in an already over populated area.
A strongly worded letter is necessary. HA. I laugh because they were sent, and nothing was done.

Midnight Madness

As I have mentioned before, the Saturday before Christmas is the busiest shopping day of the year. What about the Saturday before the Saturday? And will it still be bad around 11pm? Who is open until 11? ALOT! But more specifically to you, the shops on Mass Ave. between Harvard and Porter. This Saturday night, do some last minute shopping-late. It can't be too busy on that street so late, avoid the stress of crowds, and purchase some unique items. There are no chains like Target or Home Depot. More of along the lines of Rosie's bakery and Paper Source. There are several other shops, but i can honestly say, i have no idea what they are called.
But check them all out tomorrow night!

We tend to get a little wrapped up in materialism and stress this time of year. Even though i try to keep it simple, I find myself freaking out over a busy party schedule and growing shopping list. This morning I ran across a blog, On the Streets of Cambridge, which chronicles the life of a homeless man in Harvard Square. Snap, back to reality, I need to chill out and keep in mind what is really important this time of year.

Sadly-the following event passed. It was today, and i failed you devoted readers. I wrote this post 2 weeks ago, and meant to publish it last week. Between work, and the holiday season right here, right now, it slipped mine. As did the whole blog in general. Sorry for the lack of updates, I will try to be better this week. I am going to post this cupcake write up anyway. I know you aren't getting free cupcakes anymore, but now you can see how they tried, and remember Lyndell's is awesome! You should go to Ball Square and buy their baked good all the time.

Lyndell's Bakery in Ball Square is celebrating 120 years of business. To show their appreciation, they will give a free cupcake to anyone that visits the bakery. Before heading over here is some history.

Au Bon Pain robbery attempt

It is never good news when you see three people running through an alley way stripping off an outer layer of clothes. That's what I would think anyway if I were the security guard who witnessed Au Bon Pain robbers flee the scene.
Three men stormed through the back door as the shop was closing and employees were trying to leave for the night. One man had a knife. The employees were tied up, and the manager was told to open the safe. The manager got so nervous he forgot the combination and asked to sit down. He then bolted out the front door. Suspects had no idea what to do at that point so they also left, but through the back door. A security guard in Harvard Square saw these three men running and was able to give the police vague descriptions.

The suspects are described as one white man in his 20s with a medium build and two black males in their early 20s and taller than six feet. One black man is described as heavy set, while the other man has a medium build.

No one is safe anymore. I feel as if Harvard has become particularly scary.

Do some good this season

There are unlimited needy families and this is the season it usually hurts them the most. Innocent children not understanding the joy of Christmas due to some tragedy or another. Whether it be poverty, abuse, alcoholism, loss of parent(s).
There are unlimited trees in banks, BJ's, places of work, these trees are filled with children who would love to open a brand new pair of socks, or a sweater, something so simple would fill them with joy.
Help a family out this season, pick up a name off a tree. Tis the season to be giving. If you would like to help out some families, but are unsure of what I am talking about, here is a wish list for three different families.
Each of these families are receiving services from Respond Inc. a Somerville shelter for women and their children who are leaving abusive relationships. Unity Church of God is organizing/supplying these items.
To claim an item you can call the church: 617-623-1212 OR you can also pick up a wish list tag in the foyer of the church.
After purchasing items please mark them with Family number 42, 43, or 44 and drop off unwrapped gifts at the Church by December 16th.
If you live further away, but would still like to help, you can mail a check to the church. Make it out to UCG and add Respond in the Memo line. The donations will be sent to the mother's who will then be able to shop for their own gifts.

Since you may not receive a personal thank you. I will thank you. Even for taking the time to read this and understand that we may think we have it rough, but we have our homes, our happy holiday memories, and our safety.

Safe toys??

With all the breaking news stories, I feel like nothing is safe anymore. Do you question if your kids toys contain a dangerous amount of lead? Now that the boxes are gone, you see the "made in china label" and get a little nervous. Sen. Patricia D. Jehlen, state Rep. Denise Provost, and the Alliance for a Healthy Tomorrow is trying to help the Somerville community shop with ease by hosting a day of lead testing.
The testing will be done with a portable X-ray fluorescence (XRF) meter. The meter is held against the product, and an X-ray beam analyzes and reports the elements in the product within 30 seconds.
Things to have tested include:
Anything made of vinyl such as children’s toys, shoes, raincoats, lunch bags, handbags, backpacks (for lead, cadmium).
Children’s jewelry (for lead).
Pillows, foam cushions, children’s pajamas (for brominated flame retardants).
Brightly-colored ceramics such as flower pots or old dishes (for lead, cadmium).
Office products with soft plastic parts such as staplers, binders, etc.
Electronics: computer parts, video game controllers, etc. (for lead and brominated flame retardants).
Other products can be tested as well.

Holiday Craft Fair

I went to the mall Friday, that's right. Black Friday. There were not as many sales as I had hoped. But then again, I didn't get out to the stores until 6ish. Lame in the eyes of serious shoppers i guess. So, I didn't get nearly as much shopping as done as I had hoped. Something that will be helpful to me as well as people who hate malls this time of year: Union Square Main Streets' Annual Craft Fair.

A press release from Union Square Main Streets said four craft markets and open studios at the fair will feature gifts including sculpture, jewelry, knitwear, photography, handbags, electronics, greeting cards, wreaths, and more. The Sherman Café and Bloc 11 will be on the scene if you get hungry. Local bands The Doctors Faux and Chris Mancini and the Pretty Pennies are set to headline live performances throughout the day.

Something else I always think about it to hit up artist co-ops. Family members usually enjoy home made gifts. It doesn't say anything about you needing to be the one to make them anymore. What are we third graders? I kid I kid.

Like many others I cut through the alley next to Central Kitchen quite frequently, of course I have noticed the artwork, thought it was cool, but it wasn't until I ran across this article that I knew what it was about.

What's even more dope is how the grafitti-like art is public, lacks a corporate sponsor and is wholly legal. Supine's piece is part of a huge project on the wall outside Central Kitchen (567 Mass. Ave., Cambridge) and in fact, the entire 81-foot wall is covered from top to bottom in a poster-painted 3-D graffiti-stenciled pastiche. The last week in October, Supine and 19 other artists met in Cambridge to create a public display of cutting-edge street art that defies description. More than a simple wall, the entire southeast-facing facade, from HVAC ducts to window sills (up to and including parts of the roof) are plastered and splattered with characters, words and colors. The art will remain there for all to see until the weather, or something else, washes it away.
"The wall is true in spirit," says contributor Celso (of the Endless Love Crew), "but the best work to me is the stuff that people are willing to go to jail for. It's more of a rush when you are painting in the dark, watching your back and trying to finish a work before the cops arrive."

Hargo admits that something may be lost from a "legitimate" mural of street art, "But," he says, "we tried to put it together in such a way that it wasn't quite as tidy as a gallery. Many decisions were made by the artists on the spot based on space constraints, some guys went over others -- like what happens on the street -- and in some cases feathers were ruffled. But in the end everybody realized that's the way it goes with street art."

Next time you are in Central, swing by its pretty cool.

The Day After...

The day after Thanksgiving. One of two scenarios:
1. You hosted Thanksgiving and you have guests coming out of every nook and cranny, and you are unsure of what to do with them.
2. You went elsewhere for dinner, and now it is the next day, and your kids are bored and activities need to be planned.
I have the answer! Zoo Day! Franklin Park Zoo and the Stone Zoo are opening their gates for a Get in the Zoo Free Day. I mean the only other thing to do is shop, or go to the movies. Huge events, but shopping is not ideal for kids, and movies are not ideal for parents. This is definitely a win/win. What better way to work off that pound of turkey and extra piece of pumpkin pie.

I could always use more shady in my life, as well as a good down to earth place to grab dinner and a beer. Just came across this review of La Hacienda in Somerville and it looks right up my alley.

But while it indeed is seen by many as simply a dive bar, it really is more of an Italian-American restaurant that serves a wide variety of dishes. The surprisingly extensive menu includes such familiar dishes as ravioli, lasagna, veal marsala, chicken piccata, shrimp scampi and the like.

While diners often come to La Hacienda to order full dinner entrees, what many others come here for is one thing, and one thing only: Bar pizza. The bar pies at La Hacienda are simply tremendous.

I recently posted about Ball Square Cafe and Breakfast. In it I mentioned I had plans to go to Sound Bites next door, but was drawn away due to the line outside in the rain. My review was pretty great, so I find it only fair to now add Sound Bites point of view.

I went to Sound Bites on a Sunday morning. 9:30am in hopes to beat a rush. Surprisingly went well. As we were being seated I looked out and the line had formed down the building. There was only two groups ahead of us. Point! for being seated as a group of 6 in a timely fashion.
Point! When you are in line, you can take turns with your fellow breakfast eaters, to run in and grab a coffee from the self serve station and go back outside with it. They also have some pretty delicious flavors. Snickerdoodle, Chocolate Raspberry, Pumpkin Spice, as well as all the usual suspects.
NEGATIVE! They make your hot chocolate for you, which is completely acceptable, EXCEPT, they make it taste like hot water. I was so disappointed. I had to in addition get a coffee.
The food was delicious, I don't know if I can make it a point though because it was the same chef who started both.
NEGATIVE! They are quick to get you out. I like to linger and chat and take my time. Luckily the owner did not snap at us, they were just quick to take plates, but they asked every time if we were done before grabbing them. I had expected so much worse. What I think was funny was an obvious regular commented to the owner when he came to get their plates "You are not yourself today"
Which would I go to? It is hard because i got VERY different things each time. Once i got stuffed french toast. Another: an omelet with sausage. So both places have great food, I think I would alternate. The atmosphere is definitely chicer at Ball Square Cafe. Thats my two cents, now everyone else can decide which they prefer.

Here is the fun part, there is rumor to be feud between the two. The chef left to go next door and now they hate each other. I need facts people-who has them! Comment, please let me know.

For those of you that have kids in the Somerville school system, or will at some point in the future, this should be of interest to you. There will be a workshop at the Kennedy school to discuss inclusion classrooms in Somerville schools. This could benefit kids with learning disabilities, behavioral problems, as well as create possible individualized plans to assist in the maximum educational experience. Parents, community members as well as guest speaker principal of Boston O'Hearn's Elementary School will be present.

This event is hosted by Somerville Community for Inclusion, a group created by
Somerville Special Education Advocacy Project (SSEAP), with sponsors Somerville
Public Schools and Somerville Special Education Parent Advisory Council (PAC).
Co-sponsors of the event include the Disability Awareness Group (DAGS), the
Haitian Coalition, the Brian Higgins Foundation, Somerville Early Head Start,
the Welcome Project, and Somerville Community Partnerships for Children.

Apparently Benjapon's in Davis has closed down and will be replaced by Joey's Thai Cafe. The only thing that was really original about this place was the benjurioto or whatever those Thai burritos they had were called. Really could anyone ever be at a loss for a burrito in this area? As long as they have decent Thai Ice Tea and Pad Thai I'll be happy.

Of course, I have heard great things about Sound bites, so I was headed over there. I found parking a few blocks away, and it was pouring outside. Stupid nor'easter in November. I had heard there would be a crazy line outside , but I thought, seriously? today? No way. I was wrong. The line wasn't long, but it was definitely outside, and did i mention it was pouring? As my friends and I stood outside for a few minutes we realized we were standing next to Ball Square Cafe and breakfast. It looked nice, but i think what drew us in was no line, and it was dry.
Entering Ball Square Cafe and breakfast was a great choice! Upon entering, the owner greeted us and pointed us to a table. They had granite/marble tables with a dark look. It had exposed brick, which i think is classy. In addition, they had black paper napkins. Now I understand they were still paper napkins, but the black added a little more to the class scale.
For food, it was delicious! It was not your regular diner menu. Think of it as omelette's for dinner. An omelet with peppers, spinach, and feta. Or how about some borsin? I myself chose the banana stuffed french toast. The portions are huge! I definitely over ate. Another bonus was get your own beverage. They had a coffee station with tea as well as a cooler with soda, juice and other cold drinks. The waitress will make espresso and hot chocolate, and it seems like home made whipped cream.
If you grew up in Somerville, you will know the owner. He apparently knows everyone! We mentioned we were from Somerville and he actually said "no you're not." He welcomed everyone that came in, and most of them by name. Very personable and friendly.
HIGHLY recommend this place. Have yet to be to sound bites, and i will make it there someday, but i just find it hard to stand in line for some place that they will yell at you, when there is a pleasant atmosphere just next door. Literally.

Their organization strives to help women and their children create options for a safer life, free from domestic violence, and to further the efforts of the larger community to end domestic violence.
Koop will be starting off the evening with some funky grooves and DJ Raliegh Fingers, Selector70 and Tara Hubbard of Soul-Le-Lu-Jah , Stoodio53 and Soul Touch will be keeping the dance floor happening until they kick us out. Preventing Theft

Somerville Police, 311, and Somerville's website are teaming to prevent theft in the cit. How? A cool yellow sticker you get to place on your expensive electronics, AKA: WRAP.

The purpose of WRAP is to create a database of portable electronic devices: makes, models, serial numbers, and their owners’ details. The information collected helps identify stolen property and potentially to identify the perpetrators when stolen property is recovered by Police and pawnshops.

Signing up for WRAP requires a few steps. Registering your portable devices. Recommended: GPS, IPods, Notebooks, and Satellite Radio's. 2nd-protecting your stuff. Somerville Police have listed a few tips. Hopefully some residents are already aware of most of these helpful tips.
*Don’t store your portable electronics in the car
*If you must, secure them safely and out of sight.
*Keep windshield clear of suction cup rings that indicate the presence of electronic devices.
*Keep power cords out of sight.

Once you have registered your property, and something is stolen, file a police report immediately. You must then report your stolen property on juststolen.net
Police as well as citizens use this database to help recover stolen property.

For those of you that are hidden under rocks, the Red Sox made the World Series. They played an amazing game Wednesday night and a pretty good game last night. No matter how you think about it-they won both! 2 to go. Why is Ellsbury on my mind you ask? Minus the fact that Rachel hearts Jacoby-he successfully stole 2nd base last night. That means (drum role) Free taco for all of America! Not any taco any day.

Myself, not a big fan of Taco Bell, but i will probably go get a taco-cuz i can! Now here is the question, someone steals a base tomorrow, does that add equaling two taco's? "Witches' Night Before Halloween"

There will be an attempt to break a Guinness Record, and you and your kids can be part of it! McIntyre & Moore Booksellers presents author Lesley Bannatyne. She will be conducting a book launch, which includes an attempt at the record as well as the book signing. *Largest Gathering of Halloween Witches (Reciting Poetry)
Come to the signing dressed in a witches costume. Then all will parade to the center of Davis Square reading out loud. You do not need to purchase the book to participate.
"'Twas the night before Halloween and all through the cottages
The witches were stirring their brews and their potages.
Their cupboards were bursting with hop toads and newts
And they'd shined up their pointy-toed fancy dress boots."

In order for this feat to work, all participants must come to McIntyre and Moore at 7pm dressed in a Halloween witch costume (men, women and children welcome; imaginative variations encouraged) and sign their name on an official Guinness list. The group will process from McIntyre and Moore to the center of Davis Square and welcome in the Halloween season by reciting the text from "Witches Night Before Halloween." Notary Public Nancy Shafman and Edwin Smith, Esquire will officially verify the attempt. If the group sets the record, all involved will receive certificates. Other perks for participants: bragging rights, plus possible inclusion in the Guinness books and online sites. Bannatyne also plans to upload a video of the gathering onto YouTube.

This is probably the second safest place to go. I feel like you will have a good mix of non baseball fans here as well. They have a lot of TV's now, but some of the are hidden in the bar. It is odd. I do want to recommend the Frozen Mango Mojito. Oh my goodness, so tasty!

A little further away from the T, but definitely worth it. Delicious burgers, although not comparable to R.F.O'Sullivan's. But they have a black and Blue burger that is delicious. Good amount of TV's in the bar area, and you can see them from MOST of the tables.

Halloween Happenings

Halloween is right around the corner. Some festivities have already happened. I am not sure what I am doing for Halloween yet, not really a fan of this holiday. It requires being creative, or willing to spend $60 on a pre-made costume. I am into neither of those things. So, it is a struggle every year. But for those of you that heart the scary freaky day, here are a few ideas for Cambridge/Somerville.

Horror movies will be projected throughout the night, food donated by Kickass cupcakes, and of course candy!

Watch out Somerville drivers. City is cracking down on some rules they were a little lenient on before. Specifically parking to close to the corner. Below you will find an intriguing article, which also includes a full list of intersections they are proposing to deal with. As a Somerville resident, yes I am concerned, but also. Why this now? What about Forest St. On the line of Cambridge/Somerville?? That street is a two way, but blatantly only room for one. And due to the sharp corner, you never know what you are driving towards. I don't know how many times I have had to back out onto Beacon due to oncoming traffic. OR ever heard of alittle st. called Oxford? Due to there being two in Somerville, the city likes to forget about this one. Also right on the line of Cambridge, never has street sweeping and is littered with broken mirrors. If you don't have a mirror that folds in, you are taking a big risk. One time, the whole front of my car was smashed in, mirror and tire!
I see safety concerns for possible future struggles, but what about the present struggles. I feel like since I live on the border of Cambridge, I am in my own little city. Both Cambridge and Somerville refuse to even acknowledge me. Makes me a little sad.

Beaded Fair

Interested in beads? I am not talking beads you used in the fifth grade to make friendship bracelets, or braid your BFF's hair. Artists from all over the country are gathering on Saturday to show off their beads, beaded jewelry, and supplies. Also The Women’s Craft Cooperative of Rosie’s Place will be present and showing/selling their work.

Burren Comedy

Ed Byrne is appearing at the Burren tomorrow night for a night full of laughter. Some of you may remember his buddy, Keith Farnan, from St. Patrick's Day.

Irish comic and Fringe Festival favorite Ed Byrne, said to be the biggest comic in Ireland, which means he should also be the biggest comic in Southie, Charlestown, Brighton and parts of Dorchester and Somerville, comes to Somerville to perform at the Burren. Byrne has appeared at the Montreal Just for Laughs Festival six times, and at the HBO Comedy Festival in Aspen. He has made five appearances on Late Night with Conan O'Brien, and is a regular guest on The Panel on RTE Television Ireland. Tour de Somerville

Unless you are hard core and don't mind frost bit, prime bike riding season is coming to an end. So, next Saturday, bring out the bike for a little tour of Somerville.

This year's ride will explore the flat side of Somerville, avoiding all of the city's hills. We'll ride along the Community Path and its future extension, then take a level, low-traffic route through East Somerville to the Mystic River at Assembly Square. From there, we'll ride alongside the river into a bit of South Medford, then return through West Somerville back to our starting point.

The Tour begins at 10 am at Seven Hills Park, behind the Somerville Theatre in Davis Square. Our nine-mile ride will be leisurely-paced, easy for cyclists of all ages. We strongly encourage all riders to wear helmets.

Bowl-a-thon

At Saccos Bowl Haven in Davis Square. This is to assist in raising money for the Center for Cancer Support and Education.

Money donated will help support their Wellness Program, which is a one-on-one series of sessions for cancer patients, their family, and caregivers, to try a variety of wellness exercises such as guided meditation, art and music therapy, reiki, journaling, life coaching and dialogue, and creating their own "pathway to wellness" depending on what the individual needs. The Center also offers free support groups.

Teams are 5 people. Or you can call the center to be paired up with a team. The center encourages everyone to raise appx. $100-$200. Each team will be paired with a corporate sponsor that will match all donations. You can find your own, or call the Center for one.
Teams are encouraged to dress up! This is a costume bowl-a-thon! You should be creative and be thinking about your sponsor.
Free food! Redbones, JP Licks, as well as Dial a Pizza have all donated dinner. Registration fee and shoe rentals are covered by the Center. There will also be prizes and DJ's. Yes DJ's plural.

It's been confirmed! Miracle of Science owner, Chris Lutes, has signed a lease for the old Greenhouse property. 3 Brattle St. prime Harvard property. It has been four months since Greenhouse closed its doors. Hopefully we will see something soon. Will it be another Miracle of Science? There are no definite answers yet. Lutes also owns Cambridge 1, the pizzeria on Church St. in Harvard.
Some things that need fixing? There was no public restroom in Greenhouse, nor was it handicap accessible. Hopefully with the new renovations, this will change. Having worked at Greenhouse for appx. a month, I was a little sad to see it go. They had the best french fries and honey mustard sauce, but it was a killer to ask for extra feta. Something like $2.50 extra.

I was walking home from Davis Square late last night, and an interesting site passed by me. A bicycle train of 7ish people. What makes this one different than the rest? They were mostly very tall bicycles, and one of the men was dressed up and wearing a top hat. In addition to his stunning outfit, he had a disco ball, and some music riding along with him. The last bike on this train had some for of fish net over her wheels with glow sticks of some sort throughout. Who were these people? A club, a group of friends? I am so intrigued!

A Sox Fans Guide to Balitmore

I went to more Sox games at Camden Yards than at Fenway this season, kinda sad I know. With the cheap available tickets and easy trip more and more sox fans are flocking south to catch games. So, if you happen to be one of these fans here are a few tips.
* Buy tickets ahead of time, yes some will be available but why chance it.
* You can bring water in from the outside, so take advantage of all those vendors.
* Its easy to take the light rail from the airport to Camden yards, but the ticket machines take exact change, so have dollar bills and some change (1.60 / trip). They also don't check your ticket, but they have all these signs saying you need one, and everyone seems to buy them, so I went with it.
* Every restaurant in the inner harbor will have a long wait, don't walk around for a half hour thinking you are going to find the one place that doesn't.
* People are really nice, and most are also drunk.
* There are two Dunkins in the area, one up Howard st near university center and the other is on Light st.

It exists. Worldwide. For serious! Tomorrow, September 19-Talk Like a Pirate Day. Last year one of the boys I work with told me the best pirate joke, and I never thought I would have a chance to share it. Well here it is!
Why couldn't the pirate go to the movie?

Somerville Community Gardens

When I first heard about the opening of the Durrell Community Garden, I thought it would be simialr to the Boston Gardens. That doesn't make sense though. But what I found out was better anyway.
Somerville is home to six (2 more very soon) Communtiy Gardens. You can rent a plot of grass to create your very own garden. Living in a city with very little green, never mind actual yards with rooms for gardening, I thought this was huge.

Each garden is managed by one or more volunteer Garden Coordinators. Coordinators assign plots, help gardeners get seeds and compost, and provide information and advice to those who want it. Garden plots are available on a first-come-first-served basis. If no plot is available, your name may be added to a “wait list”. Gardeners are charged a nominal fee and asked to sign a letter of agreement recognizing the cities rights and the gardener’s responsibilities.

Durrell Park is special because this will be the first designed for gardeners with physical disabilities. There are raised beds for people who are in wheelchairs.

Durrell's opening will occur Tuesday 9/18 at 4:00pm.
Allen St. Garden will open the next day, Wednesday 9/19 at 4:00pm.

After being out of town most of the last week, tonight, I'm finally home. With beer in hand I sit down to enjoy the Sox / Yankees game. I flip to NESN and nothing, dammit its on ESPN. So I switch over and sit back to relax and watch the game. Not only in the first few moments in my viewing does the evil empire tie the score but I realize how much I hate the commentators. I'm not sure why I hate them, it could have been the 20 min explanation of the pesky pole or the comment about how 80% of Jeter is better than 100% of anyone else. I miss Jerry. Mute time?

Grab your leis and flowered shirts as Todd Sargent transforms Union Square into a tropical destination, with sights and sounds from the Hawaiian isles.
DJ Brother Cleve will launch the evening with a tropical soundtrack to a backdrop of vintage surf and Hawaiian footage. The Mai Tai Serenaders, featuring Rick Russo on ukulele, will croon to the sounds of Hawaiian pop. Polynesian Dance Arts will perform Tahitian dance as well as the Hulas of Hawaii. Headlining the evening will be Waitiki, presenting lounge sounds in the vein of Martin Denny, Les Baxter and Arthur Lyman, along with original compositions, for a sonic Tiki cocktail.
The evening will finish with a pastiche of clips from films and documentaries about Hawaiian music, including Susan Friedman’s “The Ki Ho’alu: That’s Slack Key Guitar.” Sargent, responsible for turning the space under McGrath Highway into a 70’s dance rave up this summer, will create a magical landscape, festooning Union Square with palm trees and other tiki ephemera.

The first 50 people to arrive receive a free lei.

Tonight a candlelight vigil will be held in Somerville. It begins at the Cedar St. entrance to the community path. Honor guards from both police and fire departments will also march.

Can't find the time for the gym? Or can't find time to make new friends? That's my issue, ever since college the friends have all settled in, families, moved away, fun, fun, fun. Or lack there of. For me kickball has been the answer. But, kickball can't be the answer for everyone. So, how about walking? Somerville is starting a walking club for ladies.

The Somerville Recreation Commission is accepting registration for the women’s walking program, “RecXercise.” The program is offered Mondays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the high school field house. This “prescription for fitness” program includes a warm-up, paced walking to music, and a cool-down.

Registration will be held Thursday 9/13 from 6p-8p. Or you can get registration forms online.
Walking group will start 9/17 and will run until March.

Somerville Outdoor Movie Addition

Some of you may remember the post in July about the Somerville outdoor movies. Well an addition has been made. Due to popular demand Madagascar has been added to the line up. Madagascar will be shown tomorrow 8.28 at Hodgkins Park. (Holland St./Simpson Ave.) Movie will start at dusk.
Also added to the line up was viewers choice Ferris Bueller's Day Off. (Conway Park) Footloose was a close second, but unfortunately will not be seen until next year.

Seidman and Graham play integral roles in the strategic planning for redevelopment in New Orleans through MIT’s Department of Urban Studies and Planning. They will discuss their work and the department’s New Orleans Rebuilding Initiative, including the status of rebuilding, challenges and deep seeded problems, and national dissemination strategies. I don't usually watch this show, I admit I have seen it, but only at the gym, because i don't even have cable. But anytime there is a reality show and they say someone is from Mass, i get super excited. So here is your chance beautiful Boston ladies!
America's next top Model is coming to Boston tomorrow. They will be at Felt. There are some eligibility requirements of course. Some of them are:
*Must be at least 5'7" (check with some to height to spare!)
*Be beautiful (check)
*No previous modeling in a national campaign within the last 5 years (check)
*18-27 years old. (check hit the end of the range today!)
*Not currently holding a public office (check-phew, being VP of SGA in college would have killed my shots.)
*Willing to be photographed clothed, partially clothed, or naked. (NOT CHECK)
Shoot, having sweet calf muscles probably won't help my un-toned belly look nice. I am out.

Cambridge Arts Festival

The festival will be an arts festival with a focus on performing arts, visual

My mom has been on gluten free (basically means wheat free) for a few years now. When she comes to visit it's sometimes hard to find places to grab a quick bite to eat. Come to find out, right down the street from my house the Oxford Spa has a good selection of Gluten free baked goods. I have yet to check it out, but next time my mom is up I will be sure to stop by.

Project MUM (Meet under McGrath) is Somerville's unique way of fund raising.

Project MUM, a unique and unforgettable open-air dance party, could only take place in Somerville, a city known for its innovative use of art space. A fundraiser for the arts in Somerville, MUM is free and open to the public (with a $10 suggested donation fee.) Proceeds will benefit ARTSomerville, the Somerville Arts Council, Mudflat Pottery Studio and Somerville Community Access Television.
This year's event pays tribute to the glorious 1970s and features four hours of music spun by DJs Flack, Axel Foley and Pace, with lighting (and mirror ball) by Todd Sargent/VDA Productions that provide the perfect backdrop for your fabulous dance moves. If there is one thing Harvard Square is missing it is a grocery store. That should change by this fall. Luckily, not a chain, but an independent grocer will open its doors on the corner of Church St. and Brattle.

The new tenant, Connecticut grocer Peter Whang, said he’s looking forward to moving into his new store, called market in the Square, even if it means snubbing another Ivy League school to the south. For years, Whang has owned two groceries minutes from the Yale University campus in New Haven. Earlier this year, Whang sold both stores to be able to move to Cambridge.

I have lived on both sides of Harvard and I prefer the Watertown (Well technically Cambridge) Shaws as opposed to the Porter Square. But nothing compares to the prices of Market Basket. No better people watching either :) Maybe this independent market will bring some competition.

Anyone know of Yelp? A pretty interesting site full of reviews by regular people. Or as they put it "Real reviews, real people." They are starting a yelp bowling league. If you are registered (it's free) they will be bowling at Lanes and Games on Thursday's. I am pretty sure they are going to try to make this a regular event. They are starting it out on Thursday August 16.

If you are not interested in bowling, you should check out Yelp.com anyway. It is a pretty exciting site, and they have recently added an events section, which is where you will find more info about their bowling league.

Growing up, this was one of my all time favorite movies. Julie Andrews was practically perfect in every way! When I went for interviews I sang "A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down, medicine go dooooooooowwwnn." No I didn't, but wouldn't you just laugh so hard if I did. :)
Kidstock Creative Theatre will be at the Central Library to host the interactive show. Now I have no clue how close this is to one of my top ten favorite movies/musicals, but it seems like it could be close. Kids grades K-6 will enjoy this most.

King Corn is a humorous and touching documentary about two best friends who decide to move to Iowa to grow an acre of corn – after finding out (through laboratory hair analysis) that their bodies were made primarily out of….corn. But this is not your typical buddy picture. While it does trace a year in the life of two friends, the film is really about the history of corn in modern America and the filmmakers’ relationship with the crop they’ve decided to grow.
After the somewhat shocking discovery about their bodily composition, Ian Chaney and Curt Ellis move to a small county in Iowa (where, coincidentally, both had farmer great-grandfathers) in order to find out how they (and most other Americans) ended up made out of corn. The two friends convince an Iowa farmer to lend them an acre of land to plant their corn crop. They purchase genetically modified corn for planting, and with the help of their neighbors, some heavy machinery, and lots of chemical fertilizers and herbicides, they end up growing a bumper crop of corn. But as Ian and Curt show us – this isn’t your sweet summer corn-on-the-cob we’re talking about – it’s corn bred specifically for industrial applications. The two friends decide to find out what happens to the corn they’ve grown after it leaves the grain elevator – and find that tracing their crop is easier said than done. Ultimately, however, they come to the conclusion that their corn is likely destined for one of two American industries: animal feed or corn syrup
