Last Call For Donnie Darko

Last chance to catch Donnie Darko on stage this weekend.

During the presidential election of 1988, Donnie Darko, a troubled teenager, encounters a six-foot rabbit named Frank, who tells him the world will end in 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes, and 12 seconds. Donnie returns home to discover that a jet engine has crashed through his bedroom – and so begins one of the strangest and most haunting stories ever told.

A new adaptation of the 2001 cult film (which featured Drew Barrymore and shot Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal to fame), Donnie Darko is a mind-bending work of science fiction with a rollercoaster plot that leaps from metaphysics to time travel. Marcus Stern, director of The Onion Cellar returns to Zero Arrow Theatre to create this stage version of one of the most talked-about films of the past decade.

In case you are looking for some arts this weekend, Harvard has got it. three short plays by Samuel Beckett.

These rarely performed radio and television plays, though written separately over many years, collectively illuminate each other and Beckett's complex aesthetic methods. Prof. Scanlan will introduce the plays and their genesis as collaborative music/theatre/video pieces before each performance.
Directed by Harvard professor Robert Scanlon.

Talk Like a Pirate Day

It exists. Worldwide. For serious! Tomorrow, September 19-Talk Like a Pirate Day. Last year one of the boys I work with told me the best pirate joke, and I never thought I would have a chance to share it. Well here it is!
Why couldn't the pirate go to the movie?
Because it was rated ARRR! Hehe, I heart fourth graders.

OK, so apparently this is a big thing. International! Check out all the cool things happening.
Locally: Brattle Theatre will be featuring 1976 pirate film, Swashbuckler. Arrive dressed as a pirate or wench and get in for half off.
Plot outline from IMDB: A pirate and a hot-tempered noblewoman join forces to protect Jamaica from a tyrant.

Scary Poppins

Growing up, this was one of my all time favorite movies. Julie Andrews was practically perfect in every way! When I went for interviews I sang "A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down, medicine go dooooooooowwwnn." No I didn't, but wouldn't you just laugh so hard if I did. :)
Kidstock Creative Theatre will be at the Central Library to host the interactive show. Now I have no clue how close this is to one of my top ten favorite movies/musicals, but it seems like it could be close. Kids grades K-6 will enjoy this most.

'Cirque de Magic' With Simon Winthrop & Cirque-style Performers has come to Cambridge to dazzle us for one night only! Cirque de Magic performers regularly perform for celebreties such as The Clinton's, Tom Cruise, and Bruce Willis.
What a better way to spend a Saturday afternoon? Contortionists, magic, wonderment, as well as knowing you are helping a good cause!!
This event is a fund raiser for Art Of Living foundation's world wide service projects.

Art of Living Foundation's Silver Jubilee celebration also witnessed the inauguration of the launch for the largest global humanitarian project ever undertaken, the 'One World Family Fund'. This consolidated fund will be used to support Art of Living's internationally acclaimed educational and humanitarian services, and social programs.

Is it weird we think of fundraising more often around the holiday's? Ah, another topic for another day.

Laundry and Bourbon

Although I would have to say I prefer Cooking and Wine as my domestic / booze combo for chatting it up with the girls, I think I could give Laundry and Bourban a try.

Laundry and Bourbon is a funny and touching story about three women from early 1970's Maynard, Texas. Join Elizabeth, Hattie and Amy Lee as they struggle with their own lives and each other.
