Soul Responsibility

It should be your soul responsibility to attend this event! Respond: New England's first domestic violence agency is hosting a night of dancing, funk and prizes.

Their organization strives to help women and their children create options for a safer life, free from domestic violence, and to further the efforts of the larger community to end domestic violence.
Koop will be starting off the evening with some funky grooves and DJ Raliegh Fingers, Selector70 and Tara Hubbard of Soul-Le-Lu-Jah , Stoodio53 and Soul Touch will be keeping the dance floor happening until they kick us out. And if that wasn't cool enough, LUPEC (Ladies United for Protection of Endangered Cocktails) will be creating custom bevies for the event.

It is a very slow week of events here in Camberville. I mean with good reason, who wants to plan an event knowing everyone will be elsewhere watching the game. So, to keep ya'll entertained I have decided to give you a brief list of places I would enjoy watching the game.

Probably your safest bet. We love our red sox, and people show it in weird ways sometimes. Plus, it is also probably the cheapest. Pick up some snacks, get some Sam Adams. Obviously. Then invite a few friends. Hopefully you have a nice TV.

Usually pretty crowded. May have to get there a little early to get a seat, but loving the atmosphere! Also, they have stellar chicken fingers, blue cheese, and french fries. I'm sure the rest of their food is good, but i don't know if you noticed, but i like to stick to the fried stuff.

Uno's
820 Somerville Ave.
This is probably the second safest place to go. I feel like you will have a good mix of non baseball fans here as well. They have a lot of TV's now, but some of the are hidden in the bar. It is odd. I do want to recommend the Frozen Mango Mojito. Oh my goodness, so tasty!

A little further away from the T, but definitely worth it. Delicious burgers, although not comparable to R.F.O'Sullivan's. But they have a black and Blue burger that is delicious. Good amount of TV's in the bar area, and you can see them from MOST of the tables.

Halloween Happenings

Halloween is right around the corner. Some festivities have already happened. I am not sure what I am doing for Halloween yet, not really a fan of this holiday. It requires being creative, or willing to spend $60 on a pre-made costume. I am into neither of those things. So, it is a struggle every year. But for those of you that heart the scary freaky day, here are a few ideas for Cambridge/Somerville.

A costume Parade leaves Davis Square's Statue Park and follows the minuteman trail to Lexington Avenue Park. There will be food and games at the end.

This event is a little more adult. A benefit for the Somerville Arts Council. A Tribute to Bobby Pickett. There will be music, inimitable indie hip-hop trio Z.W.A. (Zombies with Attitude) as well as tunes spun by DJ BC. A costume contest will be judged by Halloween author Lesley Bannatyne, Vintage/Union Boot-rix Elizabeth Lafavour, and SCUL-rider/artist Skunk. Horror movies will be projected throughout the night, food donated by Kickass cupcakes, and of course candy!

Camberville Dancing

OK, again, I am going to try something new. As some of you may have noticed Rachel rarely posts, so this is my thing. SO-I can do whatever I like! Down to business, this is going to require responses from you readers.

Who knows of a good dancing place on Saturday nights?

*It is my birthday and I need help. Few requirements:

~Bands are OK. (Burren for example is perfect, BUT, all of Cambridge and Somerville attempt to fit in the backroom.)
~I like top 40, classic, 80's.
~I like bars, not clubs.

Chartreuse Cocktails

Cambridge Common is holding a blueberry beer dinner on August 9th. If this wasn't 35 bucks or I wasn't cheap, I would be all about this. Not only are blueberry beers delicious, they are going to have chilled blueberry soup, which is freaking delicious. If you are a fan of that berry that is blue, check you might want to check it out.

The Simpsons Movie

You know it is going to end when a movie comes out. This could go either way. But with a plot like this?!

When Homer Simpson accidentally pollutes the river with toxic waste from the
nuclear power plant, he gets fired from his job, and everyone has to

Karaoke popularized by the Japanese

I have never been to this place called Guido's, but I hear they have Karaoke on Saturday's! For those of us that are not going camping (i couldn't even count the number of RVs I passed on my way to work.) or the beach, what a better way to spend a night with family members you rarely see. Laughing at other people! That's one of the best reasons to go to Karaoke. Who sings at those things anyway. Well I do after a few Malibu and cokes :) Don't like to sing, $2 PBR and fun times can still be had.
Two other things I have heard people rave about: the urinal trough, and steak tips. hmmmm???

Saturday May 12 dozens of undead will be marching down Mass Ave. I live right off Mass Ave smack in the middle of Davis and Harvard. I am not sure this is something I want to see. But hey-if this is your cup of tea-go for it! (i was a little tempted when I read there would be "thriller" dancing. I heart MJ.)

Marchers are expected to make themselves up like zombies and act the part (moaning, groaning, Thriller-dancing) along the march’s route between Davis and Harvard Squares. Rain or shine, the March will wind its way down Mass Ave. and conclude for an afterparty at The Cellar bar at 991 Mass. Ave. near Harvard Square

Underground Beer Series

Looking to improve your beer skills, not party skills like keg stands and funneling, but gown up things like pairing beers with food and cooking with beer. If so, part two of Cambridge Common's Underground Beer Series, which focuses on IPAs, is tomorrow.

Cambridge Common begins their "Underground Beer Series", which will be sponsored by BeerAdvocate. The Burren comes through for all!

I heart the Burren. I truly heart the Back Room. Dancing to mostly 80's rock is freakin' awesome!! Here is the downside to the Burren. You have a few beers, you are having the time of your life dancing and singing along to Jesse's Girl when the lights go on. You look at your watch and it is 12:45. You feel like you just got started! But the big guys in black T-Shirts are yelling for you to get out . I have been with a few different groups of friends and that never goes over well.

Well-they have finally come through for their loyal fans.

Last year when owner Tommy McCarthy appeared before the licensing commission for approval to stay open until 2am he was told he needed to get community support. Oh and he did! He showed up this year with a petition signed by 1.877 community members. 1,228 being from the 02114 zip code.

The commission approved McCarthy’s request to extend The Burren’s closing time until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights – the bar’s current closing time is 1 a.m. on the weekends – with a few provisions. John McKenna and Andrew Upton, the licensing commissioners, asked that a limited menu be served until midnight and that McCarthy submit a plan for dealing with post-closing crowds and meet with the Davis Square Task Force every eight weeks. The later closing time will be up for review in six months.

A few meetings here and there, I am OK with that-as long as I can bust out the lyrics of "Don't Stop Believin" without being cut off and kicked out.

St. Single's Day

The other side of Valentine's Day. No one to give those flowers to- no worries, one of the most romantic spots in Cambridge is hosting a singles party.

A sit-in/stand-up cocktail party to mark a new "holiday" to be known at Saint Singles Day—a day that celebrates the freedoms of singularity and the ability to find mono-happiness without the tacky cards, flowers and chocolates. Superbowl

Now I know the Superbowl will not be as exciting as it would be if the Pats were there, but it is still the Superbowl! Here is something different. Your place is lame, and your favorite sports bar is just too crowded. You should check out Upstairs on the Square.
They took a different approach and focused on the food part. They may not have a big screen, but they have a good size TV. As well as-arrive in a helmet and receive a free plate of "Hot Dates" (Medjool Dates stuffed with salted Marcona Almonds,wrapped in bacon and spiced with cinnamon butter)
Other foods include: Fire Engine Chili, the hottest Grilled Cheese Dogs, Steak Frites and handmade Nachos.

We like to think of our Super Bowl Party as mellow, with the separate Zebra Room to retreat to if football talk gets too intense, and where football party food is taken to a new level.

Geary's Beer Dinner

Cambridge Common is hosting a celebration for Gearys 20 year anniversary. It all begins with a taste of Anniversary Ale; a rich strong ale.

The first course is Black Bean Cakes with a Roasted Red Pepper Sauce, paired with Geary's Hampshire Special Ale, a year-round favorite, loaded with malt and alcohol warmth.

Next in line is a Potato Leek Soup with Carrot Chip Croutons, paired with Geary's Pale Ale, their flagship beer, brewed in the style of a classic British Pale.

For the third course of the evening, there are two choices. Either Bangers with Au Gratin Potatoes and Ale Mustard or Mussels in a Winter Ale Broth with Oat Bread Croutons, paired with Geary's Winter Ale, brewed seasonally and as long as the weather is bad.

Finally, the dessert course offers an unbelievable Porter Chocolate Cake with Fresh Whipped Cream, paired with Geary's London Porter.
