When Homer Simpson accidentally pollutes the river with toxic waste from the
nuclear power plant, he gets fired from his job, and everyone has to
evacuate Springfield, possibly forever!

You also know everyone in the world loves the Simpsons. So where are you going to go to see

Once a year mid-summer Davis Square is transformed, thanks to the Somerville Arts Council. This year's theme, ArtBeast. Beginning with a Beastly Parade Workshop Friday night, this event will go through Saturday evening. Performers, vendors, and talents of all kinds.

Taste of Cambridge

Anyone who knows Rachel and I know how much we love to eat! So this event is a huge deal! The Taste of Cambridge is being hosted July 19th. Restaurants from all over Cambridge are gathering in Technology Square so everyone can get a bite!

The Taste of Cambridge is a celebration of the diverse restaurant scene in Cambridge. With cuisine from America to Japan to Brazil to France and everything in between, Cambridge is a melting pot- a tasty one to be sure- of culture and cuisine. This event features creative and abundant samples of food, beer and wine from the wonderful restaurants found around the city, enhanced by a beautiful outdoor setting, live music and a great crowd.

Tickets are $50 if you purchase them in advance. $60 at the door. VIP Tickets can be purchased online for $75. They will also be sold at the door for $75. The difference in price?

Somerville Public Schools announces its participation in the US Dept. of Agriculture Summer Food Program for kids. The wonderful children of Somerville can eat breakfast/lunch at the park or pool they are hangin out at for free. Children includes everyone under the age of 18. Available through August 24th.

Free Ice Cream!

How can you not like someone that gives you free ice cream?

Starting June 28, RCN’s ice cream truck will be making rounds in neighborhoods where RCN provides internet/cable/phone services.

RCN’s free ice cream truck will travel neighborhood streets between 5 - 7 pm every weekday and 1 - 3 pm every Saturday, handing out free ice cream to residents and providing them with information describing RCN’s signature services.

Tour De France Breakfast

Nothing like a sweet ride ending with a tasty breakfast. I say that like I ride a bike often. I don't even own a bike anymore. I want to though, and will soon, it is just not something happening right this second. Anywho, you do it :)
Ride your bike to Davis Square Redbones, they have valet parking for bikes. Or you can walk in. The cost is $7 and they set up a tv outside. Sit back, relax and enjoy the mountain stage of the tour. (Stage 9)

Each day of the tour is considered a separate race or stage; the 20 stages are of varying degrees of difficulty as the route travels 3,550 kilometers from July 7 to July 20. Redbones breakfasts are scheduled during two of the six mountain stages — the most challenging for competitors and the most exciting for viewers. Local cyclists are encouraged to put together a group or ride in alone, stay for breakfast and the broadcast, and then ride away inspired by the competition.

Redbones will be serving breakfast at 9am. Including: fruit, sausage, coffee, yogurt, scrambled eggs and more!

M Salon

BEFORE
I recently decided I would like to get all my hair cut off, not shaved or anything that crazy, but something different. I have never had short hair above my shoulders and I wanted something new. I have heard rave reviews about M Salon. I am not going to lie, I was a little intimidated by their unique decorating. Were they going to be snobs, and look down on me?

When we first opened M in 2001, we wanted a vibrant, inspiring space that would reflect the artistry of the stylists who worked within the salon, and our colorful, art-filled space reflects just that: the lively imagination of our stylists and the inventive and friendly spirit of the salon as a whole.

I was looking for a salon, but hadn't found one I liked, so the last time I got my bangs trimmed, I went to Great Cuts, they cut them almost off. I was horrified for months! I needed a professional to try to even them out, and hopefully make them look like what i call trendy bangs again.

Enough with my depressing story: So I made an appointment, and went in. Maggie the owner greeted me when I entered and complimented my outfit. Dana, my stylist asked me what i wanted and i listed a few opinions: I want it short, but i hate short bangs. He looked at me, pulled my hair a little and said i have an idea! He then talked to me about it and i was in love. I have so much hair in the back that i could make a blanket for my family. Dana cut off all my hair picked up what used to be my layered back and said "feel this, it's heavy!" I did and then shuddered a little as I held my own hair in my hand.
Dana was very friendly, we chatted. Which at times I don't really like. Sometimes it is nice to just sit there and have someone play with your hair, but this was pleasant. Not forced. Comfortable silences as well. Like we were old friends. Not really, but it was still nice. Rumor has it they have dogs usually, and I was very excited to pet them, but there were no dogs.

The one downfall. Unless you have previously been, this will probably be news. They can't add tip to your credit card. I had no cash on me. I was thrown back at that. They tell you as they ring you up. You have to go get money and go back in that circumstance. Unusual.

Anywho-I love my hair. It is cute, and usually when i get my hair done, it is practically impossible to get it to look like the day it was cut. It will look good that first day, and then never again. Not with this cut. I can recreate it everyday if I like! It is low maintenance and adorable! I highly recommend M Salon!

Life is good

Life is good festival is being held at Fenway this year. I know this is not Camberville events, but sometimes things are just worth crossing the river for. I am pretty sure this is one of them. The list of entertainment seems endless! Things such as: Dugout Photos, Seed Spitting, Dunk a Yank, Gin Blossoms, Superfan Competition and so much more!
Tickets are $20 bucks for adults and $10 for kids. Proceeds are to benefit Project Joy
and Red Sox Foundation. The goal is to reach 1 million dollars.
Spend a day at Fenway and benefit kids in need throughout Boston. I can't get in when the Red Sox are there, so I might as well take advantage of this! Rumor has it there will be some legends available for autographs and photos.

Where to pee

We've all been there, whether its a late night walking home from the bar or early afternoon when it hits you. You feel a little sweat on your brow, you squeeze your legs together, your eyes dart around at the surrounding buildings, panic sets in. Shit you have to pee and you have to pee NOW. You could try to sneak into that restaurant over there, but its a gamble. Why can't Cambridge invest in public restrooms? What is that you say, these bathrooms exist already?

These stealth toilets exist in the MBTA stations at the Central, Harvard, Porter, and Alewife stops. Some are available to the public, but are unmarked and may require help, and a key, from a customer service agent.

Starting in September, the T will pilot a program to make them more public by posting signs in the customer service agent booths and allowing the City of Cambridge to direct pedestrians aboveground to the facilities below.

Not as cool as the self cleaning bathrooms Boston is getting, but when you got to go, any bathroom will do.

For those of you that have played Guitar Hero you will completely understand the excitement I felt when I found out about this! Every Sunday there is a Guitar hero Tournament! EVERY SUNDAY!! I have been debating buying guitar hero for my house, but we just got the Wii and we are waiting for that version. Maybe? I don't know between DDR and Guitar Hero it is tough to remember what Rach and I talked about. But if I had to vote again right now, it would be Guitar Hero all the way.

For all you Harry Potter geeks

I'm gonna be honest that I haven't read any of the Harry Potter books or even seen the movies, but I know a lot of people that are huge fans. So, here are some details about the Harvard Square Release party.

The Harvard Coop will be distributing wristbands for RESERVED ORDERS starting at 5PM on July 20. Muggles who have placed a reservation for Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows with us will be able to be first in line. Wristbands must be picked up in person and are not available until 5 PM, July 20th. Anyone in line must have a wristband. Line will form after the concert (you'll get details when you pick your wristband up).

The first 500 people with a reserved order will receive a FREE Harry Potter gift bag when they pick their wristband. 8 lucky muggles will receive an extra prize in their gift bag (FREE Harry Potter DVD; Deluxe edition of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows on CD; 2 movie passes to see Harry Potter and the Order of The Phoenix). Walk/Ride Day

Friday June 29th is walk/ride to work day. Leave your car at home and head to work energy saving style. Unfortunately for me, I have yet to train on the bicycle to ride 80 miles. But FORTUNATELY, i took Friday off :) Maybe i will take the T to the beach!

Smokey and the Bandit

I can't even write this without giggling a little. It is almost as good as the Chuck Norris Marathon that was at the Somerville Theatre a few weeks ago. The original Smokey and the Bandit is playing at the Somerville Theatre.

The Bandit and The Snowman are two truck-driving southerners who accept a dare from big-shots Big and Little Enos to pick up a truckload of beer from Texas and return it to them within a specified amount of time. Picking it up is simple enough, but as they are leaving Texas, Bandit unwittingly picks up Carrie, a hitchhiking bride-to-be who just left her groom, Junior, at the altar. Junior, however, is the son of Sheriff Buford T. Justice. And when Buford and Junior discover what has happened, they go on a "high-speed pursuit" across the Southeast to catch the bandit. Enjoy this 1977 summer drive in classic on the newly renovated Big Screen at the Somerville Theatre.

Ahhh the Birds!!!!!

Apparently there are some vicious birds working powderhouse square.

I have been attacked twice this week when passing through the walkway area in the center of the rotary (nearest the funeral home) by a crazed bird, and i also witnessed a bird attack a dog over by the bus shelter by broadway. it doesn't really hurt, just some pecking, but it sure scared the crap out of me, and anyone with children in particular might want to avoid these areas.

Dunkins-new Starbucks?

I was in Dunkin Donuts this morning on Mass Ave. I know you are thinking which one. (2480 Mass Ave. -Right before the Arlington Line.) Anywho. I was in there ordering my sub par coffee. Ever since they discontinued chocolate I can't be happy. They changed it for peach by the way. Who likes peach?!?!?
Sorry, I went off for a second. I am very bitter. Back to the good stuff I found. While adding 18 more sugars to my coffee I noticed a sign. Dunkin offers Chess, Checkers and other games for you to enjoy while you relax and enjoy your morning afternoon, or evening coffee. Just leave an ID and they will hand over the board and pieces. I was intrigued. I am not a starbucks fan, but I do feel they offer more comfort. Maybe Dunkins is steppin up!

Somerville Family Fun Day

It is almost July 4th, and to begin the festivities Somerville is hosting Family Fun Day. They have scheduled fireworks fro Thursday and Fun Day Saturday. They have set their sights high this year, and expect a spectacular performance. Fireworks and patriotic performances will be done by the Sunsetters and the USO Metropolitan New York Performers.
To continue the fun Saturday is ready to go with a giant slide, face painting, BBQ, obstacle course, and DJ and so much more!

Good Times Moving... WHAT?

Why does everything I love get taken away? OK so maybe I'm being a little dramatic, but I just recently realized my love for Good Times in Somerville and reader Jesse tells me it's slated to move to Natick. Natick! Who wants to travel all the way to Natick? An article from March in the Somerville Journal says that it's being booted by the possible IKEA. Now I'll admit I enjoy an IKEA trip every once in a while, but I would much rather drive to Stoughton three times a year then drive to Natick for some beers and fun. And has anyone thought of the children, what about the children!?

Toxic toothpaste

What? Man buys toothpaste at shady convenience store. Mis-spellings througout the box. Man get sick. Obviously it is the toothpaste!
Somerville man buys Colgate at a convenience store, and it has the poisonous chemical diethylene glycol, which is found in anti freeze. What this does to your body? It is a central nervous system depressant and kidney and liver toxin.
What I don't get is how is this happening? A "botched batch" of toothpaste? Like someone at Colgate was like ha wouldn't this be funny if we made poisonous tootpaste, put it in a crap box that says from South Afrlca, and needs adolt supervision. Then whoops it got shipped to atleast 5 different states.
It seems to me like there are too many mistakes for this to be an accident,

Note to self: Do not buy toothpaste that has good "germ defence" and shipped from South Afrlca.

Charles River Kayaking

I have always wanted to kayak the Charles river. Now I have.

Things I didn't know, but now I know:
* They have free sun block (which was a lifesaver cuz last weekend I dropped mine in the toilet)
* You have to take a quiz, its hard
* Things are farther away then you think, I thought it would be easy to get to the Mass ave bridge, we kind of made it to western ave.
* Getting a double kayak is cheaper but you might not be friends at the end.

The best part of the adventure was when Diane somehow put on her life jacket inside out, this was pointed out to her while on the dock. While attempting to fix it the zipper broke. Three men then surrounded her, one with his hand up her jacket trying to fix it. While the mans hand was particularly close to her breast they joked, how does this even happen. Fantastic is all i can say.

I wonder if they placed bets on us not retuning. hummm.

Good Times at Good Time

The Good Time Emporium is fantastic. Yeah so its a little sketchy and there are a bunch of kids running around but, its a huge place and the overall awesomeness of it totally wins. If you haven't heard of Good Times its a HUGE building filled with all sorts of fun: batting cages, pool, ping pong, DDR (dance dance revolution), bars, huge perjection TVs and much more. It's so much fun, I can't wait to go back.

Rachel had one task this week. Post about the FLEA at MIT. Totally her thing, she was excited to read about it, but she failed. We now know her priorities. Unfortunately this is not my cup of tea, so I don't know that I can be so witty in this area, but I wanted everyone to know about this. I mean c'mon! A shopping trip all geeks and nerds would love!

The MIT Radio Society, in conjunction with the MIT UHF Repeater Association, the MIT Electronics Research Society, and the Harvard Wireless Club, sponsors a Swapfest on the third Sunday of each month, April through October. This is a place to buy, sell, and swap amateur radio, electronic, and computer equipment. Hams and non-hams alike are welcome. Sounds exciting! Something to keep in mind before you leave your house. If you are taking the redline from Somerville/Cambridge they are going to be bussing from Kendall to Park St. What they call the redline refurbishment project.

Somerville Gay Pride

Mayor, Joe Curtatone, will host a ceremony on Saturday June 9th celebrating gay pride.

The annual event will feature remarks by Curtatone and other community leaders and elected officials. This is the third year the rainbow flag has been raised at City Hall, after several years of commemorating GLBT Pride with ceremonies in Davis Square.

Oh Boloco, how i love you

In response to an op-ed about Boloco being unhealthy, Boloco CEO defends the ways of Boloco and extends an offer of free burritos to any one that prints the op-ed and brings it in on June 4 - 5th. Note that this offer says good in Boston and Hanover but it worked in Cambridge and Somerville as well. I hit up the Harvard Square location on my way home from work and also got a free sample of the soy smoothie. Diane stopped at the Davis Square location and they were giving out free full size smoothies of your choice. It was a delicious free dinner for all, so what if it was 14 weight watcher points. I'm gonna be honest, I don't even know what that means

I know there are quite a few people that would be angry with me for writing this, but I am OK with that. Anna's seems to be the preferred taco joint round these parts. But I don't think Qdoba is that bad, in fact I like it better. I guess it helps that I don't eat burritos only dang quesadilla's. So, I don't feel bad about telling you in Porter Square when you purchase an adult meal, you can receive a free kids meal. Only on Sunday and Monday's between 4p-8p. This is available until June 30th at the Porter Square location. (In the plaza with Shaw's and Dunkin Donuts)

Fishing Derby

When I was little (OK up to like 20) I used to love going fishing with my dad. We did all kinds of fishing, ice fishing, pond fishing, and beach fishing! That was my favorite because i could tan and swim while he waited for them to bite. I would then run up and say "Can i reel it in?" He would always let me. Then my little sisters got old enough to fish and also enjoy it. It's not such a good time for me anymore. We still go to the beach once or twice in the summer, but no more ice fishing, ever.
If you enjoy taking your kids, or niece's nephew's fishing, you should check out the kids fishing derby. This Saturday, it is supposed to be a pleasant 84 degrees. Soak up the sun and listen to them squeal when they try to reel in "the big one"

Annual Spring Exhibition

For those of us who like art-this is the place. Except way better. It is art by kids. Cambridge Multicultural Arts is hosting Cambride Public School's Annual Spring Exhibition.
Drawings, Sculptures, and paintings on the lower level by grades K-8. Photographs on the second level by students grades 9-12.
The exhibition is from may 8-june 8. They are hosting a reception Thursday May 31. It is free for both viewing as well as attending the reception, but of course donations are always welcome.

The farmers markets are opening! The markets in Davis and Central Square began last week. Union Square will begin in June. Do a little good for Massachusetts.

We are a public, non-profit, charitable service organization dedicated to the needs of farmers, consumers and communities. Karaoke popularized by the Japanese

I have never been to this place called Guido's, but I hear they have Karaoke on Saturday's! For those of us that are not going camping (i couldn't even count the number of RVs I passed on my way to work.) or the beach, what a better way to spend a night with family members you rarely see. Laughing at other people! That's one of the best reasons to go to Karaoke. Who sings at those things anyway. Well I do after a few Malibu and cokes :) Don't like to sing, $2 PBR and fun times can still be had.
Two other things I have heard people rave about: the urinal trough, and steak tips. hmmmm???

Late last night, after a kickball game and some pitchers at Redline we stopped by Pinocchio's for a slice. I had never been. It was delicious! I got the Sicilian deep dish artichoke. I wish i could have another right now. Cheap, fast, and tasty. Perfect stop in between bars.

Since this question came up last night, what is Sicilian pizza?

It's finally nice enough to get that bike out of storage and take a ride around town. If you are looking for some new routes check out TheRightRide.com, a wiki that features dangerous biking areas to avoid. Especially good for those of us who ride without helmets (deep breaths mom).

Powered by Google Maps, the site features an interactive map of locations considered dangerous by local riders. The initial list of hazards was provided by Ian Thistle, a bike enthusiast of Braiotta's acquaintance. Dance Month

I would like o start by apologizing. I am so sorry this wasn't posted sooner. I don't know how Rachel and I did not know about this. We know about EVERYTHING to do with Cambridge/Somerville. Well ok so we don't. But this seems like a big deal, so everyone should enjoy it for what is left of May! Apparently May is DanceMonth in Cambridge.

DanceMonth is a citywide celebration of the movement arts in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Neither a festival nor a showcase, it is a way to focus on the richness of dance that is already an intrinsic part of our lives. Still a collaboration between the Mayor's office and the Dance Complex, DanceMonth is now a Cambridge tradition and most eagerly-awaited herald that Spring is finally here, and here must be Cambridge.

DanceMonth is celebrating its 14th year! They are hosting things such as Dance Distractions Tuesdays@Noon, and Workshops.

I'm alive. I blame my lack of posting on my job, which has required me to spend insane amounts of hours locked in my office. Without coffee I might not be here, so in celebration I'm sponsoring free coffee day this thursday. I can't back that up. Here are the facts, the true ones this time.

Thursday, May 17th, J.P. Licks is hosting their first annual “Free Coffee Day.” Customers can visit any of seven J.P. Licks locations from open to close and receive a free cup of coffee, but that is just the beginning. In addition to a free cup of coffee on that day, guests will also be receiving a “Free Iced Coffee Card." This card will be valid through the entire summer and will allow a customer to stop into any J.P. Licks store when the weather rises above 81 degrees (1981 is the year the 26-year old shop was established) and get a free iced coffee. Why the free coffee at every location? J.P. The Great Park Pursuit

I am not going to lie. I found this on the Mix98.5 website. I am saving freeloaders points in hopes that someday I will be able to earn a trip to Aruba. But enough excuses about my surfing. The great Park pursuit sounds like so much fun!
You start by registering a team online. A team must be atleast 1 adult (over18) and one child (under 18). Teams are challenged to visit six different state parks and need to complete tasks for the week. This is done on Saturday's over a six week period.

Teams will hike to amazing views, learn to fish, pitch a tent and roast s’mores, discover secrets of the past, ride a horse drawn wagon, learn about birds of prey and even how cows are milked. Each week is filled with new outdoor adventures to discover and enjoy!

If you complete all six weeks you are deemed a semi finalist. You will then get to compete for several grand prize packages.

Spring Cleaning

Who makes it spring cleaning. Do people hoard more during the winter? Is it because you can finally open your windows? I am so curious why spring cleaning? Anyway, it is a little refreshing to spend the day kicking your house's ass. It just feels good after. Then I always make plans to attack something else, but i never seem to make it past that one day. For the past three summers I have passed many a night playing kickball, dominating the flip cup table, and making some great friends. If this seems strange to you then you are out the loop. Come on now, World Adult Kickball Association (WAKA) has been in Boston for years now. So if you need to be caught up, here is the low down. I went from penny machines, (Yes they have them-I have no shame!) to bettin' the ponies! That's right, I went from spending pennies-5cents per push of the button, to $6 a race. I think I have a problem. So I will be St. Clements Church tomorrow 7:15AM for the free bus ride to Foxwoods. $25 to get on the bus, but you get

Contemporary Book Club

I love reading. I really do heart it. So this should be perfect for me. I just don't think I enjoy chatting about books I read. Something about being not so smart S-M-R-T. (HAHA Simpsons is another thing I heart.) I wish I could just use someone's book club list for ideas for good reading. Or maybe instead I will check out this book club.

Maybe it is the nerd in me, but this sounds awesome: Science in the City – the first annual Cambridge Science Festival presented by the MIT Museum. Metro vs. BostonNow

There is a new free newspaper in town, BostonNow. I could compare the editorial content and features of both, in which I would applaud BostonNow for their innovative ideas (webcasting daily meetings, blogs in newspapers...) and state that currently I feel Metro includes more news, but I will not. Instead I would like to address the impact this news has had on my morning commute.

Every weekday I sleep walk to the Porter T stop, mindlessly grab a metro, and head down the escalator. Uneventful, until this week. Now I sleep walk to the T, grab my metro at the top of first escalator, get bombarded by another metro guy at the bottom, followed by a BostonNow guy. In my trance I end up with three newspapers. Then to top it off, 35 minutes later when i arrived in Quincy center I had to relive the situation, 2 metros and 1 BostonNow.

Apparently Metro is scared about the new competition, but instead of forcing newspapers down commuters throats, why not strive to provide better content and let the public choose which paper to read, or read both. A little media diversity never killed anyone.

Wear on Earth

When I think of clothes that are helping the planet-I think of a very funny King of Queens episode I watched last night. Carrie wears a very not nice green dress made completely of non processed hemp. It was large, bulky, scratchy, and just gross looking.
4march has made these pretty and conscientious.

Fusing style with global consciousness, 4march is a high-purpose clothing line dedicated to social responsibility. It is the designers' hope to challenge mainstream fashion design, seeking to create timeless clothing that abandons trend and finds its inspiration in various natural, cultural and artistic forms.

Marathon Monday

Tomorow is Marathon Monday. A fantastic day in boston, an excuse to drink early, run around town on a nice spring day, watch the race, and catch the sox game. Unfortunetly, its gonna rain and be horrible out.

I bet this will be said too many times to count. It is singles night at Whole Foods in Cambridge. Really? I mean I have heard the grocery store is an interesting place to meet people, but huh!
Local singer/songwriter Laura Vecchione will be performing selections from her CD "Deeper Waters", which you can also purchase. There will also be prizes, food, games, and wine. I'm not single, but I might go for the wine. I kid I kid.

Battle of the Bands

What comes to mind? A clump of movies circa 1990. Usually feel good comedies with clap-o-meters. But this one is different. Battle of all female bands.

April 7 at the Middle East you can watch them fight to the death well not really but fight for a spot on ROCKGIRL.

The winner receives an opening spot at the ROCKRGRL Women of Valor Award evening honoring pioneering all-female band FANNY, at the Berklee Performance Center on April 20. The Battle winner’s set at the award evening will also serve as a showcase for the Verge College Music Conference. Other prizes include a Luna electric guitar, six hours of Berklee studio time, a First Act acoustic guitar, one-year Sonicbids memberships, and a consultation with publicist Public Emily.

This exhilarating selection of their work, assembled by Hugo Martinez, a leading authority on the history of street art in NYC, takes the reader on an "all-city" tour of New York, displaying the extraordinary range of its taggers and bombers.

Fighting global warming is the new black. Have you noticed the influx of media coverage on the topic and increased awareness of ways to help? You go Al Gore! If you are looking for more ways to spread the word there is going to be a Step it Up Somerville rally in Davis on April 14th.

The Step It Up Somerville climate rally will be one of more than a thousand actions taking place across the country on Saturday April 14th. The rally will take place in Davis Square from 11:00am to 1:00pm. (With an aerial photo at Noon).

Step It Up Somerville will be emceed by comedian Jimmy Tingle. State Senators Jarrett Barrios and Patricia Jehlen will speak, as will Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone and Somerville U.C.C. Reverend Kerrie Harthan.

Bartending

I know this isn't the Miami post you were looking for, but be patient, it is on its way!

Bartending is one of those things i feel like anyone can be taught-either by themselves, or another talented bartender. The only thing is you aren't likely to get a job if you are teaching yourself. Harvard is hosting a one day TIPS class. They say they are going to help you get a job as well!
